Simple to Set Up But Overall Quality is Lacking, November 17, 2015

I recently obtained the Q-See QCN8026B. I was pretty excited by this as I had long been wanting the opportunity to use a network security camera. Below are the details of my experience with this manufactured goods separated by 5 points of interest.

    Hardware:

Mounting the camera with the included hardware was a breeze. Pretty much self explanatory, for the most part. Additionally, connecting the camera was as simple as connecting a POE cable from switch to the camera itself. Again, simple.

The build quality of the camera is really exceptional. It feels every bit as sturdy and weatherproof as it is stated to be. The video quality, which is one of the most vital aspects of a surveillance camera, is exceptional. Every detail is crystal clear in daylight. At night, here is still a remarkable amount of detail preserved. I also did run a quick test in an indoors background and was pleased with the results.

I have not yet tested the audio capabilities, so I am unable to comment on that at this time.

    Software:

Setting up on the software side was less pleasant. At the outset, you pretty much have to use the included software on the disc, as trying to locate the software (or nearly anything) on Q See’s website was hard to impossible. Upon using the included software, I found it was either incapable of Live View, or it was buried deep enough in their software that I was unable to view the connected camera with the included software. In the end, I had to scour their website to find software which would do Live View. This was hard, as I stated, and it wasn’t clear if this software was supplementary or was really intended to be a replacement for the software that was included with the camera. It seemed to be a newer software predestined to replace, to me. Secondly, really configuring and navigating the software to accomplish anything was frustrating. Although I was able to configure the camera and get it to be accessible on the software, I was only able to get the bare minimum of functions to work as the software was unintuitive and hard to use.

The software does seems to be very capable, offering a fantastic deal of flexibility in what it can do. As I have stated before, but, using the software is not an ideal experience. Menus are presented in a similar fashion to a smartphone. This can be excellent or terrible, depending on how you view mobile experiences. Accessing most basic features requires way more user input than I reckon must make sense. If I have one camera on the logic, why would the software not automatically pull up that one camera to view?

I was expecting a honestly plug-n-play experience from this device, which I certainly have not gotten. I am very tech literate, but have continued to have tribulations with this camera. Connection is constantly dropped from my camera. I get maybe a minute of live viewing before the camera is seen as offline. And trying to reconnect it is equally challenging. Half the time the device isn’t seen by the software, even though it is clearly still connected to the network (evidenced by my router and the fact that the camera still is receiving power.) I have attempted connecting it via a powerline adapter, as well as via direct connection and the results have remained the same.

Given the difficulties in using this camera to do the most basic tasks, I have yet to test how it handles motion sensing or remote viewing. Simply getting it to work proficiently would be what I would consider step one.

At this point, I can’t consider this to be a reliable camera that I would recommend for security. This is a shame as the video quality really is exceptional. I hope to continue to troubleshoot and I hope to get the camera working at some point. I will update this review if I find that I am capable of getting this unit to properly operate.

Nice 4 megapixel camera. Only buy for a Q-See logic., November 11, 2015

It’s a nice ip camera, but I wouldn’t buy it if you don’t have a Q-see logic. It’s not compatible with Synology or other NAS security systems. Here is no on camera storage for recording or snapshots. It’s just not really predestined to be separate from a Q-See logic.

It does take a pretty excellent picture (I’ll upload a few samples later). The night vision is pretty excellent. It is a fixed lens camera, so here’s no way to change the focal length or to zoom (besides digital zoom which is worthless). But it is a privileged pledge that the cheapest. It’s priced right for the features you get.

In the end, it facility fine, but I wouldn’t buy it unless you’re buying for a compatible Q-See security logic.

I chose to give this camera to a excellent friend yesterday when his wife informed me that they had just been broken into the night before. My friend is a fantastic mechanicaldigital sort of man so I thought he could get better use out of the device than I. He is quite taken with the camera but found it too complicated to install and connect to his computer for him. He is in the process of finding an electrician and/or computer expert to do the actual installation. We both reckon it will be a fantastic asset for him in enabling him to observe via his computer what is going on outside his house. When the device is finally installed, I will add to this review.
