Replace the fan and be pleased,
Here are 3 fans in this unit. The Power Supply (PSU) fan is the loudest running 12V. Second loudest is the case fan running at 5V. Then lastly here is the onboard chip small fan with heatsink. The only two you need to replace are the PSU fan for sure and the case fan is simple enough to fix even as you are at it.
I replaced both the PSU fan and the case fan with the Noctua NF-A6x25 fan. These Noctua fans are worth the money. These fans aren’t a perfect fit but it is simple to make them fit. This Noctua fan is rated for 12V but will initiation up with just 5V.
First remove the case fan and the case fan holder screws. Then remove the power supply from the case.
To replace the PSU fan I opened up the PSU by taking the 5 screws to pop the lid open. I’m not worried about the sticker on one of the screws. This fix is worth it. Then unscrew the internal fan and cut the red and black power to the fan in the middle leaving room to connect another fan. Then you wire up the Noctua fan. I used shrink tubing to secure the connection but you can use electrical tape if you want. The fan wont fit on the inside because all you have is room for maybe 15mm and the fan is 25mm thick. So I mounted the fan on the outside of the power supply but still inside the case. Make sure of your fan orientation air flow direction that it is blowing into the PSU. You don’t want to mount it backwards. I used two screws to secure the fan from the inside of the PSU. You can’t reach the other two holes. It will be fine with just two screws. If you want you can use the Noctua supplied rubber bumpers on the other two holes. Now you can place the cover back on the PSU. By the way the fan is so silent and you won’t need the Noctua low blast adapters.
Now go to the case fan and you need to drill out the bottom two dimples on the holder. Use a 11/64 drill bit. You may need to wiggle the drill and make the hole a bit larger because the dimples don’t exactly line up. Just play with the drill small by small adding lateral force and then test the fan screw (supplied by Noctua). You aren’t drilling out all 4 dimples. Just the bottom two. To place the fan in the holder you just gently pull the holder apart a bit. Don’t slide it in but rather just pop in in from the side..(no sliding). Use the Noctua rubber bumpers on the top two fan holes. Inseart the rubber bumpers before putting in the screws. But don’t mount the holder with the new fan yet. You now need to place the PSU back as the case fan will be in the way otherwise. Then after the PSU is in place you can now screw the case fan holder with the Noctua fan attached. The two fans will over lap each other just a tad but they will not touch. Now you can’t plug the Noctua case fan with the supplied Noctua 3 pin adapter because the red and black cables don’t line up. I still used the 3 pin plug but I used a very small screwdriver (a jewelry watch micro screwdriver) to push down on the 3 pin connector and then allocate you to slide out the connection pins. I then reordered the red and black to the the positive and negative as they were in the same original case fan connector. Don’t worry about the yellow wire…it isn’t needed and I just inserted it into the third spot on the 3 pin connector and it hangs out and is not connected to the logic board since the logic board only has two pins.
How excellent is this modification. I used a blast db meter and it went from 59 db loud high pitch blast down to 49 db low frequency wind sound. It went from irritating to nearly undetectable. But what you are hearing now is really neither of the new fans. What you are now hearing is the 3rd fan we didn’t replace which is the small CPU heatsink fan.
By the way the Western Digital Purple Hard Drives make no blast that I could hear..they are silent except when the first power up for a second or two.
This modification I feel is simple and worth it. I couldn’t live with this unit before. Now I run the unit and it doesn’t need to be enclosed in a cabinet. Even before inside of a wood cabinet I still heard it from the room next door at night. Now total silence. AHHHHHH. I’m sooooo pleased.
It really is a shame Q-See didn’t invest in better fans for this logic. I don’t see how they can market this to the home consumer with how loud the original fans are.
This fan replacement was simple. Just do it. You’ll be glad you did.

|Excellent quality – horrible tech support – missing features from ancient QT logic,
The first is the fact that upon motion, you can no longer email 3 picture attachments – only 1. With most emails I receive upon motion, I miss the theme causing motion because the picture is usually taken too late.
The second is the fact that here appears to be a hard-coded timeout of 3 minutes between emails upon motion. So if motion is triggered, you won’t get any more emails on motion for 3 minutes – potentially missing further motion.
The iOS app for remote viewing is much less intuitive to use, pet views do not seem to work properly, viewing motion only events doesn’t work, etc.
Using the built-in remote viewing via a web browser or the PSS software also is horrible when trying to view motion events. The ancient logic would list out in a table view of all motion events, allowing you to view any of them instantly. The new one doesn’t allocate you to jump between motion easily.
Overall I’m VERY disappointed I spent the extra money to change from the QT to the QC series. Tech support, when you can get a hold of them or when they call back, is off shore and next to useless. I even allowable them to in the least connect to my NVR to troubleshoot, but they couldn’t fix my issues. Once they had a successful login, they either stayed logged in or tried logging in days later (after they determined here was nothing they could do). When they complained when they couldn’t connect (because I revoked their access), I clarified I wasn’t maintenance this account open indefinitely for them.
Now I need to choose if I wait and see if they ever fix these shortcomings or shop for a new logic from another vendor.
