Failed Cameras, Stripped Down Firmware/Software – Better Value with other Brands,
Please keep in mind that this DVR and all of the cameras are made by a company called Dahua. Q-See is simply a re-branding & reselling the logic for a high mark-up. The sad part about this packaged DVR, is that many of the better features of the Dahua DVR firmware/software have been removed by QSee from the core code. The in commission logic software of this DVR is a stripped down version of the Dahua OS. Even as the latest version of the Dahua software that powers this DVR is very well laid-out and packed with many new features, Q-See, for some reason felt the need to remove some of them??? Overall, the DVR hardware and software runs silent and cool and seems to be stable, just a bit stripped down. Other resellers of this Dahua DVR offer a pure software experience.
Ok, enough on this! Another problem is that this DVR already comes with a 2TB hard drive, which is fantastic, but this drives the price up, and it is not the right type of hard drive for a DVR. All reputable vendors today are using hard drives that are specifically made for 24/7 DVR recording. The most common of these is the Western Digital Purple Series Drives up to 6TB. This DVR is packaged with the cheaper Western Digital Green Series Drive. This is another obvious attempt to strip the DVR of its real the makings and save a few bucks. The WD Green drives, even as they run cool, are not designed for the rigors of a DVR background, recording/playing up to 16 simultaneous channels 24/7. I would expect a very small life from the drive in this set-up. So basically, built into the price, we are paying for the incorrect drive, and then will have to pay again for the right drive???
OK, on to the Cameras…Even as the 8 box/bullet style cameras seem to perform well (decent daytime image, OK night image), I am not sure how well they will hold up to constant direct exposure to rain/snow hot/cold, sun, etc. The 2 indoor dome cameras we received were of very poor quality. The overall image quality lacks sharpness, appears fuzzy and has a real washout effect from direct light or sunlight. We tried the camera with different cables, power adapters, etc., same poor results. At night, the IR LEDs project a very, very narrow beam. A link of feet in either direction off center and the image is very dark. The first dome camera failed within a day, the picture started to get choppy, flicker in and out and then just blacked-out. We tried the other dome camera and after 2 days the same thing happened. If the camera remains connected, at times the picture will suddenly reappear for a even as and then disappear again. This seemed like a loose cable, but it wasn’t as we tried other cables and had the same problem. When connecting the bullet camera to the same video/power cable and DVR port all is ok. So it is basically a camera issue and not the cables or DVR.
At first we thought we will just not use these 2 indoor dome cameras, since even if they worked as they must, the quality of the picture and IR night viewing was very poor. Before buying replacement dome cameras from another manufacturer, we wanted to confirm that this DVR would in fact work with other brands of Cameras. To do this, we first wanted to confirm that this was in fact a HD-CVI DVR. Every other reseller of Dahua markets these DVRs under the new HD-CVI protocol standard developed by Dahua. QSee is the only one, of many other companies, that refers to this DVR as their Heritage AnalogHD Logic, as if it is a new standard that they invented, and is unique to them. Nowhere in any of their manuals, spec sheets, website, does QSee mention of acknowledge that this is in fact a HD-CVI Logic.
HD-CVI is the hottest new standard in DVRs that now allocate HD video over standard/existing COAX lines (RG59/RG6). As we mentioned, since QSee already stripped some features from the DVR software, we were concerned that they may have also tweaked the DVR to only work with their branded cameras. So we called QSee to check on this. First off, the Tech support is from a foreign country, they speak very poor English and are very hard to know. I flat out questioned the first guy…is this a HD-CVI DVR and he couldn’t answer the question. He gave me a very meaningless roundabout answer. I then questioned him if he even knew what HD-CVI was. He told me to hold, and that he would check to see if he knew……small answer, he had no thought! He transferred me to a level 2 tech support. I questioned him the same questions, and this guy had no thought either. He told me he would check and get back to me within 24 hours. It’s been 10 days and no response…I guess he is still checking. I never bothered calling back, because if they don’t know the answer to a question this basic and fundamental, they are useless.
Long Report Small, we did hold another brand HD-CVI camera from Amazon to experiment with, and it facility with the QSee DVR, so it is in fact HD-CVI…

This logic was replacing my ancient DVR and is like switching from a Toyota to a Ferrari,
Pro:
-Clean look of the bullet camera, hiding the wire
-Temple come with the Dome camera for simple install
-QR code making setup simple
-Bullet camera housing is very lasting
-White camera is prefect for home and retail
-With the mobile app, you can now adjust the angle on the camera and see it right on your phone, no more guessing on the angle
-Very sharp image
Cons:
-Missing temple for the bullet camera base
-Because the bullet camera is not glossy end, simple to get the camera dirty all through installation
-Small bullet camera base, you need to loosing the screw to install the base first before fitting camera into place
-Connecting the cable to the DVR is very hard, I have a small hand but it took a lot of effort to connect the cable
-Room of improvement in DVR setup and the camera setting, wish it make it more user friendly and simple to know
-Zoom in feature only available all through play back not live view
