Excellent camera and DVR working on ancient tech, would recommend PoE instead though., September 28, 2015

This is overall a pretty excellent logic if you’re needing to provide high coverage in a honestly small area. For example, this would be excellent for covering the interior of a small to midsize store, or the exterior of a small construction. The reason being isn’t so much a fault of this camera logic, as just a basic fact of the cabling logic it requires. With the coax cables it uses, you’ll have to run one cable directly from the box for each individual camera, which is a nightmare for a huge installation. What you really want for a larger installation is a PoE logic, which (most) will allocate you to make “banks” of cameras by running one CAT5E/6 cable to a PoE hub in one area of your construction, and connecting a bunch of cameras off that hub with shorter cable runs. And since the P in PoE = Power, you don’t even need to connect each camera to an outlet, as the data and electrical connection comes over a single cable. Here are Wifi cameras too, but for an installation this large, I’d strongly recommend against that.

Further than that, this logic facility honestly well. It came well packaged, each component having its own box inside the larger shipping box, making it simpler to split everything up. Each camera comes with 60 feet of cable, which sounds like a excellent bit, but chances are if you’re installing 16 cameras you’ll need a lot more cable, so plot on purchasing extra. Also plot on having a high pledge LCD monitor with an HDMI input, as it’s a bit of a waste to try plugging this into that 1024×768 CRT monitor your ancient logic had.

The DVR itself has a ton of features, including scheduling, alarms, and just all sorts of small things you can use to customize your setup. It seems pretty complete feature-wise to other systems I’ve worked with in the past, certainly nothing major appeared to be missing. Mouse and keyboard work fantastic on it, as well as the mobile view thing through the app, so I can check it on-the-go.

The cameras are also honestly nice, excellent heavy duty housings, lots of IR LEDs to make them usable at night. The image quality is pretty excellent, I’d say pretty close to the quality you’d expect from a 720p image, so no complaints here.

All-in-all this is a excellent, low-priced (for 16 cameras) DVR logic, but I wouldn’t recommend deploying a DVR logic with 16 analog/coax cameras in the days of PoE digital HD cameras becoming very affordable.

I was to some extent excited to see how this 16-cam equate with my current 16-cam PoE 720p pledge monitoring logic. Let me say the after spending the time to self install Cat5e/6 Ethernet cabling throughout my residence and understanding the nuances of what is to be expected, this logic certainly has its limitations which I will try to elaborate all through this review.

The 2Tb DVR and 16 cameras is well built but I cannot attest to the long-term uptime as that will require over 6 months of constant use. The entire logic was delivered well packaged. The first limitation is the necessary use of coax (for video) and power cabling back to the DVR. The fact that coax cable can be hard to run inside walls and over attic space compared with Ethernet cabling which has more flex, and therefore coax cabling will be more challenging. The 2nd “limitation” is this 16-cam logic only comes with 60 feet of cabling which isn’t long enough for most home applications everywhere here is exterior and interior (1st and 2nd floors) locations to install the cameras. The alternative would be to hold 100 or 200 feet cabling which increases your initial outlay for the logic. Keep in mind that the longer the coax cabling introduces other performance related issues like the type of coax (RG58/59 vs R6) which addresses the quality of the video in addition to how unwieldy it becomes for a one-person job. I can’t address the possible power supplies issue since I did not hold longer cabling for this review. Another option would be to get a 500 feet roll of the appropriate coax cabling to crimp on the BNC connectors yourself. To stress again, 60 feet of cabling is just too small for most of the locations that come to mind but one can say 60 feet is probably an average run.

After installing the cameras indoors and outdoors, my disappointment was with the quality of the video on my outdoor placed camera which appeared to be of lower pledge than my 720p PoE cameras. Night vision was proportionately of lower quality and nearly hard to discern. This is really not something I can live especially when here may be a future need to identify persons or objects of interest all through the day or night. The camera specifications is better suited to an indoor (small) background as I can’t see it picking up any details if here is a distance between the camera and the object in question. Again, the cameras seem well built with a metallic case.

The DVR was very simple to set up and after going through the initial wizard steps and completing the fields and hitting the NEXT button, it was up and running …. literally, it was that quick and impressive. The DVR picked up my cams.. Make sure you connect an Ethernet cable to the back of the DVR to allocate the next step which is to install the Q-See QTView android app. I cannot verify the iPhone or Window phone app availability. Q-See provides a small HDMI cable and a basic mouse to navigate on the DVR’s onscreen prompts and selections. The DVR defaults to a 16-cam view and can be customized to what options. Yes, here is enough options to make it boot up more tailored for your background. Cautionary note and as the warning mark found prominently on the DVR case, make sure you permanently power down the attention from within the DVR attention screen before physically cutting out power from the DVR. This is my next issue – why isn’t here a power switch on the DVR? To stop the DVR from long-lasting to draw power, I have to physically pull the power cable from the back of the DVR and to power it down. Likewise, I have to plug in the power cable to jolt the DVR back into operation. An alternative will be to connect the DVR AC adapter cord to a surge suppressor (a fantastic thought for this DVR anyway) and use the power switch on the surge suppressor.

The video from the camera on a 16-cam view is sufficient but once you drill down to that one camera view on a large (55″ LCD TV), the video introduces a lot of pixelization that is unacceptable in today’s world of right high classification. I was able to record and playback video without any issues or jitter. The connection to the mobile app was excellent but the view was to some extent not in the same proportion. It looks stretched height-wise. A small issue but not a showstopper as it does what it is suppose to do. The android app did crash a link of times on me but again nothing major. Another issue I really cannot accept is the high blast level of the fan blowing on the right side of the DVR case. It makes a high shrilling blast that beats the blast from a medium sized room fan running in the same room in high speed. The fan is a major deal breaker unless one learns to ignore the blast or places the DVR in a storage room or in the basement and runs a long HDMI cable to a viewing station like a HDMI-enabled monitor or my case, a 55″ TV in another room.

    Overall, if I position…

Setting up the logic is pretty simple. Once everything is hooked up and turned on, you can set up your password and configurations through a computer monitor. When the initial set-up is complete, you can control everything through a web page and look at the feed. It would not work on Chrome, though, so I had to use Internet Explorer. You can also access the feed through a smartphone. The app facility well, and I was able to view it even as away from home. I set up one of the cameras not far from my front door, and the pledge is very excellent. I can see anyone who comes through the door clearly, and the night vision is pretty bright and has excellent pledge, too.

I am now trying to set it up to send me an email any time someone comes through the door, but I haven’t accomplished that yet. I do not like that it will not let me back up over my network. I have to use a USB device instead. The DVR runs kind of loud, too. These are excellent cameras in a lot of ways, but need to be updated more.
